Research - Alcohol Laws

Alcohol Advertising

The UK advertising rules  for alcohol are amongst the strictest in the world.

Emphasis on protecting young people.

Alcohol ads must not be directed at people under 18 or contain anything that is likely to appeal to them by reflecting youth culture or linking alcohol with irresponsible, social success or sexual attractiveness.

The TV and radio advertising rules contain strict controls about the placement and content of alcohol advertising. Alcohol ads are banned from appearing in and around programmes commissioned for principally targeted audiences below the age of 18.

The Alcohol industry spends more than $4 billion each year marketing its products.

If you're under 18, it is against the law:

for someone to sell you alcohol
to buy or try to buy alcohol
for an adult to buy or try to buy alcohol for you
to drink alcohol in licensed premises (eg pun or restaurant)

if you are 16 or 17 and accompanied by an adult you can drink but not buy beer, wine or cider with a meal.

if you're 16 or under, you may be able to go to a pub.
if you're accompanied by an adult however, this isnt always the case it can also depend on:
-the specific conditins for that premises
-the licensable activities taking place there.
