For the past week or so I
have been working in my sketchbook a lot going through idea after idea for the
book cover The Wind In The Willows, I have also been researching on
google a lot of book covers which already exist to get an idea of what mine
should look like. I found that most of the book covers have the boat and
the river with the characters inside, and pretty much every single book cover
has a willow tree. All of the book covers I found came across calming and happy
very much for a child.
I sketched out an in
particular idea which was the opposite of this happy nice cover. In one scene
of the book the mole is in the woods on his own with lots of wolfs surrounding
him staring at him through the trees, at first all you see is eyes. It's a
scary part of the book which I wanted to explore, I did sketch this idea out in
my book but after thinking about it I came to the conclusion that I wanted it
to be really appealing to children as it is a childs book.
I have sketched out an idea which I really liked, I wanted the background to have
a teabag effect so this would make the book look old, I thought this would be a
good idea because the book itself is old. Then I Also wanted the tree trunk to
be right in the middle on the spine of the book cover with branches coming out
of either sides. I also wanted the tittle to be big on the cover but more to
the right hand side so it wouldn't cover the branches. I thought of having the
mole and the water rat to be coming in from the left hand side of the page on a
river whilst they're on a boat whilst mr. toad leaning on the tree, looking as
if he might be waiting for them.
as i liked my idea i wanted to play around with it on illustrator to get an idea of what this would look like, so i have done a mock up design on illustrator and im not too sure if my idea is strong enough. so i will continue to research and sketch out new ideas.
